Within U of T, there are boundless opportunities for students to act on whatever passion they wish. Some students desire to help others in need, whether it be through academic assistance on campus, or across seas and borders to provide humanitarian services.

Brooklyn College senior Raisa Santos and sophomore Sadiya Hoque know the importance of understanding the political and structural problems facing developing nations and their citizens. As members of the Brooklyn College Global Medical Brigades (BCGMB), they joined 11 other Brooklyn College students, and Ernesto Cuba of the Graduate Center of The City University of New York, on a weeklong trip to the towns of Cañazas, Guacuco Guna, and Guacuco Latino in Central Panama this past August.

On Sunday evenings, Pre-Med student Jordan Sullivan heads to Hyer Hall for an important meeting. In room 111, SMU’s chapter of the Global Medical Brigade meets for its weekly meeting. The crew may not look like much on its own, together they are making a difference, providing medical care for those in need. Junior Bryce Jenson is a member of the club.

While most college students look forward to summer to relax, Sahuarita resident Grace Sisk and the members of the University of Arizona Medical Brigades geared up to travel to some of the world’s poorest countries, bringing with them life-changing opportunities.

A group of students will travel to Honduras in the summer of 2019 to volunteer in a medical brigade through the Global Medical Brigades chapter at Bowling Green State University. While in Honduras, students will have the opportunity to assist with medical procedures for people in need of medical attention living in poor communities.

“Chelsea Connell and Robyn Metcalfe saw education, community engagement, and social justice come together during the STU Global Brigades water brigade in Honduras. The STU chapter of the international student-led movement spent nine days in Los Terrones, Honduras, working with locals to address concerns about access to clean water, and digging trenches and laying pipes for a new system.”

The Illinois Wesleyan University Global Medical Brigades team provided health care to more than 700 people in need and made long-lasting sanitation improvements in several communities during a recent trip to Honduras.

A pair of Marquette alumni, former undergraduate brigade volunteers, now physicians return to Nicaragua with Global Brigades as health care professionals.

Global Brigades celebrates 15 years of service in rural Central America with Marquette University. What started as an idea from a College of Health Sciences student would quickly grow beyond all expectations.
