Student Spotlight: Delara Rajabi Abhari ’23, MPH ’24

Delara Rajabi Abhari ’23, MPH ’24, is an advocate for global health both inside and outside the classroom. Last summer, she brought both together when she finished her public health science and master of public health finals and got on a plane with 20 fellow students headed to Athens, Greece. Delara spent a month providing medical services to refugees in the region as president of UMD’s Global Brigades chapter, a nonprofit organization of student volunteers and medical professionals who work alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems.

The Marquette business brigade visited two cities in Panama Jan. 7- Jan. 14 to help local banks and businesses learn about accounting, leadership and marketing.

While visiting Panama over winter break, 10 business students not only got the opportunity to educate local businesses, but they also learned a lot from the locals they served.

Cost is the biggest barrier for care, says Adrienne Ciaravella, Guelph Medical Brigades volunteer.

Adrienne Ciaravella didn’t know what to expect when she travelled to Guatemala last year as a volunteer providing medical care but she’s about to do it all over again in Honduras.

Ciaravella joined the Guelph Medical Brigades in her first year as a biomedical student at the University of Guelph. It is a local chapter of Global Brigades which aims to provide holistic and sustainable solutions to medical care in underprivileged communities around the world.

Methodist students to spread healthcare knowledge on inaugural trip to South America

Students at Methodist College are taking the skills learned in the classroom and applying them to improve the lives of people around the world with the Peoria area’s first Global Brigade.

Established during the Fall 2023 semester, members of the group will travel to the South American country of Panama to help underserved communities with limited access to healthcare.

Durango High School students raising money for hands-on learning opportunity in Panama

In recent years, hands-on learning opportunities have become a popular method for school districts to develop student career pathways.

However, members of the Future Health Professionals club at Durango High School are trying to take it to another level.

This summer, the students will be traveling to rural Panama, where they will set up a mobile medical clinic in the country under the guidance of the nonprofit organization Global Brigades.

As part of fall 2023 Cameron School of Business courses, UST-Houston global marketing students served as effective small business consultants to entrepreneurs in Honduras. Under the leadership and management of Assistant Prof. Dr. Cassandra Ditt, the students partnered with Global Business Brigades, an international movement of university students and professionals “building economic opportunities in remote, rural and under-resourced areas of Honduras and Ghana.”

There’s No Stopping Savi Agarwal

In fact, “no” isn’t a word the 17-year-old second-year BME student uses very much at all.

Savi Agarwal is a master of time management. When she graduates in Fall 2023, she’ll have earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and minors in international business, language, and culture and health and medical sciences — and she’ll have done so in only 2.5 years.

Between classes, she’s been involved with several pre-medical student organizations, volunteered at local clinics and hospitals, and done medical research. And as if there wasn’t enough on her plate, Agarwal is the founder of Medical Brigades, a Georgia Tech student organization dedicated to providing medical care to underserved communities.

Grant Viscardis Selected as October's Student Leader of the Month

Senior Grant Viscardis has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for October 2023. Originally from Hot Springs, Viscardis came to the U of A to study biology.

He is the president for EMPOWER RSO, leads the Global Brigades to Panama as the medical chairman, volunteers at the Full Circle Food Pantry, a Patient Care Technician at CHI St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs and is a research assistant in assistant professor Joisah Leong’s FullStackNeuro Lab addressing the causation of substance use and early life stress on the mesolimbic pathway in the brain.
