Overview

Red Bank is a small, predominantly Maya village located in Stann Creek District just a short distance from Toledo District in southeastern Belize. Red Bank is popular for hosting a large gathering of Scarlet Macaws. Global Brigades began working here in 2024. The typical house in Red Bank is made of cement blocks and wood and most of the community members work as day laborer, artisans and skilled labor (teachers, merchants, technicians, etc)

The most common illnesses seen in community members are hypertension and diabetes and diarrhea in children. The top needs expressed by Red Bank inhabitants during their initial communications with Global Brigades include having a permanent nurse in the health post, school renovation to cater to more classrooms and access to a feeding program for students who cannot afford meals and employment.

HEALTH CARE ACCESS:

Red Bank has a health center in the community, however, a nurse is the one who provides consultations and she is not permanently there to assist community members. Red Bank has only 3 Community Health Workers. The health center does not have a lab and most of the time it is crowded and people need to wait for long times of period to see a nurse. In some cases, the health center does not have the medications people need and they do not have access to a private pharmacy.
