Overview

Los Tambos is a village in the Cayo District of central interior Belize. The village is in an agricultural region with the most frequent crops being citrus and banana, Global Brigades began working in Los Tambos in 2024. There is not health facility in this community, people have to go to San Ignacio city for public hospital which is about 49 km away from the community. The service at this hospital is very poor, it is always at full capacity and it has limited medications. People from Los Tambos prefer to go to private Mennonite clinic in Spanish Lookout village which is about 20 km away and they pay $60 per medical consultation. Community members are looking to get a Community Health Worker, who would be trained in San Ignacio city. The most common illnesses in the community are flu and diarrhea.

Most houses are elevated wood homes and they all have non-dirt floors. Almost all homes have flush toilets indoors and have septic tanks. People drink purchased filtered water. System water is chlorinated but not filtered so it is not safe for drinking or cooking. Community members work in agriculture, day laborer and merchants.

The top three needs of Los Tambos community are physical health center building support on education and hurricane shelter.

HEALTH CARE ACCESS:

People in Los Tambos do not have access to a health post in their community, however, they can go to San Ignacio, which is a community nearby that takes about 50 minutes by vehicle to all services. San ignacio system is not good, takes all day. People tend to look for private health care, but it is too expensive

It also needs improve health post, infrastructure and access to frequency of care/personnel. Limited spaces for large population. Most of the time, public polyclinic doesn’t have necessary medication. So get subscriptions and have to buy in a private pharmacy.
