HEALTH CARE ACCESS

Las Animas, Cedros does not have a health center due to its smaller size. If community members need to see a doctor or dentist, they must travel the mountainous terrain to Cedros, the nearest town with a health center. This health center is a CESAMO, or the larger of the two different types of health centers run by the Honduran government. Here, patients can see at least one doctor, nurses, and sometimes even a dentist. Unfortunately, the trip to the health center takes over 1.5 hours on foot. There are no buses that connect the community with the town that the health center is located in, so the majority of community members must walk to reach the health center.

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

Global Brigades trained a total of 11 Community Health Workers in Las Animas in February of 2017. CHWs were trained as part of a larger area that includes 2 smaller communities, Higueritos and Cedros. Therefore, the total of 11 Community Health Workers covers 3 different communities. During their training, CHWs learned about treatment and care for some chronic illnesses as well as other health topics like first aid, caring for pregnancies, and first response in emergency situations. With these skills, the CHWs help to relieve some of the patient load for the staff in the health center by teaching preventative health.

LAS ANIMAS’ ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

When Global Brigades arrived in Las Animas, the community a surface water system with a pump built in 1990. While this system has been maintained well, the system has not been able to keep up with the community’s needs. Community members would load jugs of water on the backs of donkeys and walk to and from the well in order to gather enough water for their family each day when there is not enough water. The time and energy that was necessary in order to retrieve water caused families to sacrifice important hygiene and sanitation practices that would require more water.
