Overview

Jiniapa is located within the municipality of Cedros, Francisco Morazan, Honduras. The typical house is made of adobe, cement blocks, mud, and wood. Children in the community have access to primary and secondary education. The municipality of Jiniapa doesn’t have a water system but the municipality is overseeing the planning of a project which will include a water system construction for community members. Most community members work in agriculture, arts and crafts, and animal raising. The top needs expressed by Jiniapa‘s inhabitants during their initial communications with Global Brigades are medical attention, water system construction, and access to education.

JINIAPA’S ENGINEERING CHALLENGE:

Currently, the community of Jiniapa doesn’t have a water system. The community members have a water storage unit also known as “pila” where they collect and store rainwater when they can. The community also has a well but community members have to pay a fee to acquire water from it.

JINIAPA’S ENGINEERING SOLUTION:

Jiniapas’ water system design was completed in August 2023. The optimal solution to provide this community access to water was to design and construct a water system that contains a water storage tank of 10,000 gallons and install approximately 10 kilometres of adequate piping. This will ensure the correct water distribution and coverage across the community.

JINIAPAS WATER CHALLENGE:

At the time of Global Brigades’ initial visit, Jiniapa did not have a formal water system and depended entirely on a public hand well, which was insufficient to meet the needs of the population. This limited access to water posed potential health risks for residents. Despite these challenges, the community showed a strong commitment to improving its water conditions, leading to a productive and meaningful partnership with Global Brigades.

The community did not have a complete water system; however, a well was in the process of being drilled as the first step toward the future construction of a comprehensive water system for the community. Then, the water system was constructed with the support of Global Brigades

JINIAPA´S WATER SOLUTION:

Global Brigades constructed a water storage tank at a newly designated site within the community as part of an effort to strengthen and optimise the local water distribution system. This infrastructure improvement was designed to enhance storage capacity and promote equitable access to water for all households, directly benefiting 225 community members. In addition, the project included significant upgrades to the distribution network through the installation of 4.00 kilometers of appropriate piping, which allowed the system to achieve optimal pressure and ensure consistent water delivery to every household without the need for sectorization.

The enhanced water system was completed in December 2025 and represents a meaningful improvement in the community’s access to safe and reliable water.
