Agua Fria is a community of just over 30 houses in the mountains of the municipality of Cantarranas. People’s health in Agua Fria suffers from a lack of clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene facilities, healthcare, and education. The common cold, parasites, and diarrheal disease are common. Few homes have concrete floors, properly functioning latrines, proper water storage, or efficient stoves with chimneys. School is offered until 6th grade. After completion, children begin to work in agriculture to support their families. The closest health center is located in El Junco & Joyas, which is about 10 km away.

Agua Fria does not have a health center in the community. The nearest health center is in El Junco & Joyas, located about a 1.5 hour walking distance. Dental care is not available in the community or at the health center. The most common illnesses seen in the community are diarrhea, common cold, and cough.

Agua Fria does not yet have community health workers. Global brigades will begin training community members as soon as possible. During their training, community members have learned how to provide care for some chronic illnesses, as well as about other health topics such as first aid, caring for pregnancies, and first response in emergency situations. With these skills, the CHWs help relieve some of the patient load for the staff in the health center by teaching preventative health.

Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and we are able to provide 7 educational charlas a day. In addition to patients from Agua Fria and El Junco & Joyas, communities from eight other communities attend the medical brigades.
Working closely with the medical program, the dental program provides fillings, extractions, and fluoride treatments as a standard part of medical brigades. Most community members do not have regular access to dental care due to the lack of a dentist within a reasonable distance.

Members of Agua Fria attend medical brigades in El Junco & Joyas. The brigade is held in the local school, which has 4 separate classrooms. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and we are able to provide 7 educational charlas a day. In addition to patients from Agua Fria and El Junco & Joyas, communities from eight other communities attend the medical brigades.
Agua Fria partnered with a nearby community, Bañaderos, and Global Brigades in order to address their water shortage. Neither of the two communities have a centralized water system that provides access to the entire community. The main water sources in Agua Fria y Bañaderos are local streams, and the water is untreated. Community members usually load water jugs on their backs and heads and walk to and from the streams in order to gather enough water for the day. A small selection of community members have private wells unavailable to the rest of the community which has caused some resentment between community members. Agua Fria y Bañaderos are two organized communities with a town council but lack a properly trained Water Council.

Global Brigade’s Engineering and Water teams plan to construct a new, full-scale gravity flow water system in Agua Fria y Bañaderos. It will be a three tank system consisting of a 10,000-gallon tank and two 5,000-gallon tanks. The water will be supplied by the water source in the mountains above at a rate of 40 gallons a minute. The conduction line will be installed from the water source which will carry the water to a nearby, lower elevation site where a 10,000 gallon tank will be constructed and equipped with a chlorinator, the two other tanks will be equipped with chlorinators as well. All 105 households will be connected to the project through a distribution network of piping stretching 21km. The new Water Council will be trained on water treatment, legislation, system maintenance, administration, and operation. A community Plumber will be identified and trained on the same topics. Upon completion, a monthly water fee will be established by the community that will be paid to the Water Council for water treatment and system maintenance costs and sustainability. A Basic Sanitation Committee consisting of community volunteers will be established and trained to help present educational workshops in the school to teach children about water and health related topics. Global Brigades is currently seeking funds and working on gaining support from the local municipal government to be able to break ground on this project.

Global Brigades is working on the implementation of the Holistic Model in Agua Fria but has not yet begun with the Business Brigades program. Now in the planning phase, a market study and the establishment of a community business will start as soon as feasible.
