HEALTH CARE ACCESS

Health care in Greece consists of both public health options through the National Health Insurance and private clinics and hospitals. Refugees and asylum seekers are able to seek services from these health care providers but face obstacles of transportation, translation, and cost among others, which often serve as a deterrent to seeking and receiving the necessary care. In most refugee camps, there are healthcare professionals present.

In Thiva, primary health care is available 5 days a week and a patient referral system is in place for the residents. However, there are limitations to the work the healthcare professionals can do. Their primary focus is typically to treat acute needs and provide follow up, but specialty and additional services, greatly needed by the camp resident population, are not available.

DENTAL CARE ACCESS

Working closely with the Medical Program, the Dental Program provides fillings, extractions, and fluoride treatments as a standard part of Medical Brigades. Access to dental care is challenging in Greece due to lack of transportation and translation, as well as prohibitive costs. The Dental Program is working to fill that gap with regular access to dental care in the camps.
