Recruitment Resources
Set a Recruitment Goal
The year round recruitment efforts made by volunteers are the driving force behind Global Brigades. Because of you, we are able to make sustainable impact in our partner communities. At the start of the brigade planning process, it is important that each chapter understands the volunteer recruitment goal that they must reach. These volunteer recruitment goals are set strategically in collaboration with in-country GB staff and when met, they ensure that brigades have the adequate manpower and funding to run a successful brigade and support the sustainability of these projects on a year round basis.
Importantly, the number of volunteers you are able to recruit as a Chapter directly correlates to the Donation Goal of each volunteer going on brigade. This means that the more the more volunteers you and your chapter members recruit, the lower the Donation Goal for each volunteer is and the more impact you are able to make! In addition to lowering the Donation Goal of all volunteers going on the brigade, there are specific scholarships available for Chapter Presidents based on volunteer numbers.
Please visit the “Fundraising Tools” section to view the Volunteer Recruitment Numbers/associated Donation Goals for each program and country and available scholarships.

Recruitment Strategies
Below are a few best practices for recruiting volunteers for a brigade. Contact your Campus Chairperson for more recruitment strategies ideal for your campus.
Listservs
Take advantage of departmental list serves to create visibility among large sections of the campus population and specific interest groups. Target a diverse student population and make sure announcements are titled with key buzz words (International Development, Sustainability, Alternative Spring Break, Service, Travel). Emails are most effective when sent out in a professional, timely manner. Make sure your communication is crisp, concise, and action-oriented so that the recipient can get important information quickly and can find out how to get involved. Avoid spamming and try to time your email just right – too early or too late can reduce the effectiveness of emails.
Recruitment Table
Set up tabling events in your student union or other popular locations on campus. Make sure your table draws people in and is an area with high foot traffic.
Flyers
Create flyers and hang them around campus. Make sure your flyers include meeting dates, times, locations, and contact phone numbers/email addresses.
Club Fairs & New Student Orientation
Take part in organization fairs, club days, freshmen orientation, and similar campus events to reach out to younger members.
Networking with Other Clubs
Reach out to other student organizations on campus with similar interests to see if you would be able to promote your upcoming brigade at their next meeting. Make sure to keep your presentation concise and to send a thank you to the group’s leadership after your visit.
Brigade Leader Scholarships
Recruiting beyond the minimum requirement is always encouraged. Brigade leaders who are able to recruit the number of volunteers listed below for their program type AND meet all deadlines throughout the brigade planning process are eligible for the available scholarship listed for the type of scholarship that they achieved.
2020 Medical Brigade Leader Scholarship Opportunities*
Scholarship Type | Number of Volunteers Required | Available Scholarship |
Scaled Scholarship | 45+ | 2 Donation Goals |
Empowered Scholarship | 30-44 | 1 Donation Goal |
Sustainable Scholarship | 20-29 | $200 |
2020 Other Programs Brigade Leader Scholarship Opportunities*

Scaled Scholarship | 30+ | 2 Donation Goals |

The value of the one Donation Goal Scholarship is equivalent to meeting the Donation Goal for one volunteer to be eligible in participating in a brigade (not including flight). The scholarship may be used towards the brigade leaders’ Donation Goal, split among multiple brigade leaders or volunteers’ Donations Goals, or used towards program-specific group donation goals. The scholarship can NOT be used to purchase flights and cannot be redeemed for cash. If at any time before the brigade the volunteer numbers drop below the minimum number needed for the scholarship, we can no longer allocate the scholarship.
*The Brigade Leader Scholarship Opportunities are currently only available for USA Brigade Leaders. UK, Canada, and Germany are currently not offering these scholarship opportunities.
