National Student Leadership Conference

Each year, Global Brigades hosts a national leadership conference for student leaders to share best practices, meet with staff to discuss programs and gather with other passionate leaders.

July 27, 2019 | Irvine, California

The 12th annual GB National SLC will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the University of California, Irvine.

The conference will bring together 200 Chapter Leaders and Campus Chairpersons to discuss important topics with Global Brigades staff. Throughout the conference, attendees will participate in a variety of trainings and workshops on leadership development and volunteer mobilization. Together, we will celebrate our achievements from the past year and explore the role we have in growing the GB movement at home and within our partner communities. The conference will also feature several of our staff members flying in from all four of our programming countries- Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua & Ghana!

The main conference activities will be held in combined Yosemite Rooms (2070-2090) on the 2nd floor.

Check-in & Check-out is at the front desk in Arkenstone. *If you cannot check-in or check-out during the times specified, you must let Global Brigades know by emailing slc@globalbrigades.org by Friday 7/5.

Conference attendees will be required to return their room key to campus housing upon check-out. UCI campus housing will provide one pillow, one pillowcase, two sheets, one blanket, one towel and one washcloth to each attendee. Linens will be placed in the rooms on each bed. Conference participants are responsible for making their own beds and leaving all linens in their rooms at check-out

Parking

If you plan on driving to the conference, we recommend parking at the Anteater Parking Structure. Attendees can purchase a 24 hour parking pass at the parking entrance for $10, which requires you to exit and re-enter every 24 hours. Alternatively, if you arrive earlier on Friday, you can purchase a more expensive overnight parking pass from UCI Parking Office (UCI Transportation and Distribution Services, 200 Public Services Building, Irvine, CA 92697-4525), which is open on Friday from 7:30am-4:00pm.

Flights

Global Brigades is unable to cover or book airfare for conference attendees. The closest airports to UC Irvine are listed below:

  • John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA), which is ~13 minutes from the campus via car
  • Long Beach Airport (LGB), which is ~25 minutes from campus
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) may have cheaper flights into the area, but keep in mind that it is at least 45 minutes from campus, depending on traffic

Airport Transport

Global Brigades is unable to provide transport to/from the airport for the conference. However, ShuttleFare.com* is offering a $5 discount off airport shuttle service for conference attendees that are flying in. To book a reservation, go to www.shuttlefare.com and use coupon code “GLOBAL2019” at checkout. Once you complete your reservation an email confirmation will be sent to you and this will be your travel voucher for your airport transportation. It will also include instructions on where to meet your shuttle when you arrive at the airport as well as any important phone numbers for the day of travel.

Dress Code

Conference dress code is casual, no need for a suit! GB attire is always welcomed and encouraged.

Rotate between three program sessions assigned based on your registration preferences; Sustainable Chapter Leadership, Fundraising & Recruitment, Leadership Development, Pre-Brigade Preparation, Creating a Holistic Campus, and Understanding Cultural Differences.
4:00pm My GB Story
Learn about how to tell your Global Brigades story in a meaningful way.
4:30pm Breakout Session: Campus Action Plans
Campuses will meet together to develop out their action plans for 2019-2020.
5:15pm Closing Remarks & Awards
The conference will close with the recognition of Chapters and Leaders with Awards!
5:30pm Dinner & Networking

Who can attend the National Conference?

Currently, the 2019 SLC is only open to chapter leaders and Campus Chairpersons. However, if we don’t reach max capacity, we may open up registrants to all volunteers as well. If you’re a typical brigade volunteer without a chapter leader title, go ahead and register and we’ll put you on the wait-list. 

Will transportation be provided from the airport to the conference?

Global Brigades is unable to provide airport shuttle service. However, the John Wayne Airport is only a 10 minute taxi ride away from campus. We do have a $5 discount code with www.shuttlefare.com, we can be applied by using code “GLOBAL2019” at checkout.

Is there funding available to help with my transportation costs?

Unfortunately, Global Brigades is unable to support with airfare or ground transport costs. However, check with your university to see if scholarships are available for attending this type of leadership conference.

Is there a conference registration fee?

Global Brigades strives to make the conference as accessible as possible to everyone. For that reason, there is no registration fee for the National Conference! All attendees must cover transportation and lodging (campus housing provided to the first 100 registrants).

I am a Campus Chairperson/Chapter President and cannot attend, can a fellow leader attend in my place?

Yes! Feel free to send a representative in your place. Just have them register and send a follow-up email to slc@globalbrigades.org including you as the Campus Chairperson or Chapter Leader in the email to confirm that they can take your place.

If my registration doesn't qualify for campus housing, where should I book my accommodations?

There are many hotels near the John Wayne Airport. You could also link up with other attendees to book and share and AirBnB.

What food will be served at the conference?

On the day of the conference, we’ll have a continental breakfast, boxed lunch, and pizza at the end of the conference. Breakfast typically includes items such as fruit and bagels. Boxed lunch usually includes a sandwich and chips. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions when you register and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
