National Student Leadership Conference

Each year, Global Brigades hosts a national leadership conference for student leaders to share best practices, meet with staff to discuss programs and gather with other passionate leaders.

The 11th annual GB National SLC will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The conference will bring together 200 Chapter Leaders and Campus Chairpersons to discuss important topics with Global Brigades staff. Throughout the conference, attendees will participate in a variety of trainings and workshops on leadership development and volunteer mobilization. Together, we will celebrate our achievements from the past year and explore the role we have in growing the GB movement at home and within our partner communities.

The conference is open to the first 200 Global Brigades Chapter Presidents and Campus Chairpersons that register. Guarantee your spot by registering now. Conference registration will close Friday, July 8, 2018.

Venue

The 2018 US National Student Leadership Conference will be held at the UIC Student Center East at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The main conference activities will be held in Auditorium Room SCE 302.

Lodging

Global Brigades will provide UIC Campus Housing at the James Stukel Towers for Friday night 7/27 and Saturday night 7/28  for attendees that register by June 22, 2018.

In the James Stukel Towers, conference attendees will be housed in 4, 5, or 8 person suites, grouped by gender. 4 person suites include two double rooms, one shared lounge room, and one bathroom. 5 person suites include two double rooms, one single room, one shared lounge room, and one bathroom. 8 person suites include two double rooms, four single rooms, one shared lounge room, and two bathrooms.

During registration, attendees can submit specify who they would like as their roommate, as well as their other suite-mates. Suite single rooms will be assigned on a first come-first serve basis. Attendees that do not submit specific room/suite-mate requests will be randomly grouped with other Global Brigades attendees. Campus Housing will provide bed linens and a towel. Check-in is at 10am on Friday 7/27 and checkout is on Sunday 7/29 at 10am.

For attendees traveling from out of state, please provide your flight or train confirmation to confirm your campus housing reservation. For attendees with special housing requests or accommodations, please let us know during registration.

Meals

On Saturday, July 28, Global Brigades will provide continental breakfast and lunch for conference attendees. For attendees with allergies or special dietary restrictions, please let us know during registration.

Each country’s Executive Director will share program achievements and upcoming changes.
11:00am Breakout Session: Programs
Rotate between three program sessions of your choice; Medical, Dental, Business, Public Health, Water, Engineering and Human Rights to learn about the program, provide feedback and ask questions.
12:30pm Lunch & Networking
Lunch provided by Global Brigades.
1:30pm Breaking the Poverty Cycle
Learn about how sustainable development is a continued effort and how GB is breaking the cycle from GB Nicaragua Executive Director, Pablo Garron.
2:15pm Breakout Session: Vote In Topics
During online registration vote for the topics that most interest you. Based on voting, 6+ of those topics will be offered during this session and attendees will choose and rotate between their 3 sessions of choice.

4:00pm How Global Brigades Shaped my Career
Discussion panel with alumni Dr. Duffy Casey, Dr. Jon Lee, and Claire Marsh.
4:45pm Breakout Session: Campus Action Plans
Campuses will meet together to develop out their action plans for 2018-2019.
5:30pm Closing Remarks & Awards
The conference will close with the recognition of Chapters and Leaders with Awards!
6:00pm Dinner Break
Attendees will break out on the their own for dinner.
8:00pm Evening Activity
Attendees will have the opportunity to network with other Global Brigades volunteers during an evening activity.
