McMaster University Student Leadership Conference

Each year Global Brigades hosts a student leadership conference in central Canada to share best practices, meet with staff to discuss programs and impact, and network with other passionate leaders.

January 19, 2019 | Hamilton, ON

The 3rd annual Central Canada SLC will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at McMaster University.

The conference will bring together volunteers, staff, and board members to engage in a day filled with leadership training, presentations, breakout sessions and discussions. Throughout the day we will focus on developing your role as a leader within Global Brigades, thinking critically about sustainable development, sharing best practices, and providing the latest updates from GB.

The deadline to register for the conference is January 1st, 2019 and your registration at the conference includes breakfast & lunch, a t-shirt, all conference materials and some other fun giveaways!

Please note that payments made for the registration fee for this conference are managed directly by the Dalhousie University Chapter, and are not managed by Global Brigades. Registration payments are not being made to a non-profit organization and are therefore not tax deductible. Global Brigades cannot be held responsible for the accountability or tracking of these payments.

Conference Details

Venue

This year’s Central Canada Student Leadership Conference will be held at McMaster University. Specific rooms TBA.

Transportation

Conference attendees should organize their own transportation to and from the conference.

Lodging

If required, accommodations should be organized by conference attendees. Accommodations with a McMaster student are available on a case by case basis (if this is of interest to you, please indicate on registration form)

Meals

Global Brigades will provide breakfast and lunch for conference attendees. For attendees with allergies or special dietary restrictions, please let us know in the registration form and we will do our best to accommodate. Group dinner at the cost of the attendee (location TBA).

Dress Code

Conference dress code is casual (GB clothing always encouraged!)

9:00am Conference Welcome
Meet Global Brigades Staff, GB Canada board members, and fellow leaders and review conference objectives.
9:30am Global Brigades’ Holistic Model
Gain a more in depth understanding of the programs that make up our holistic model of sustainable development.
10:30am UN Sustainable Development Goals & The Empowered 100
Learn more about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how they align with our strategy as an organization.
11:00am Breakout: Critical Thinking
Dive deeper into topics related to the importance of empathy in sustainable development, how to address common critiques, and how volunteers can gain cultural competency before travelling abroad. 
12:00pm Lunch & Networking
Lunch provided by Global Brigades.
1:00pm Guest Speaker

1:30pm Breakout: Chapter Best Practices
Network and share best practices in regards to recruitment, fundraising, ethically sharing your GB story, and how we can start new chapters of Global Brigades. 
2:30pm The Leader In You
Reflect on your leadership style and develop your skills to strengthen GB on your campus.
3:30pm Guest Speaker
Speaker TBA
4:00pm #GB365: Year Round Engagement 
Take some time to reflect on what it means to be a global citizen and stay engaged year round.
4:30pm Campus Action Plans & Awards
Condense all that you’ve learned into some solid action steps moving forward.
5:00pm Closing Remarks & Group Photo 
The conference will close with some final thoughts and thank yous!
6:00pm Dinner
Group will meet for dinner (location TBA)
