Dalhousie University Student Leadership Conference

Each year Global Brigades hosts a student leadership conference on the east coast of Canada to share best practices, meet with staff to discuss programs and impact, and network with other passionate leaders.

January 12, 2019 | Halifax, NS

The 7th annual East Coast SLC will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Dalhousie University.

The conference will bring together volunteers, staff, and board members to engage in a day filled with leadership training, presentations, breakout sessions and discussions. Throughout the day we will focus on developing your role as a leader within Global Brigades, thinking critically about sustainable development, sharing best practices, and providing the latest updates from GB.

The deadline to register for the conference is December 21st, 2018. Your 15.00 CAD registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, conference t-shirt, all conference materials and some other fun giveaways!

Please note that payments made for the registration fee for this conference are managed directly by the Dalhousie University Chapter, and are not managed by Global Brigades. Registration payments are not being made to a non-profit organization and are therefore not tax deductible. Global Brigades cannot be held responsible for the accountability or tracking of these payments.

Conference Details

Venue

This year’s East Coast Student Leadership Conference will be held at Dalhousie University in the McCain Arts Building.

Transportation

Conference attendees should organize their own transportation to and from the conference.

Lodging

Accommodations should be organized by conference attendees. If you’re interested, Global Brigades has has secured a block of rooms at the Atlantica Hotel Halifax for special discounted rates for event attendees that book before December 21st. To reserve a room, please call the hotel and request a room in the Dalhousie Global Brigades block (4 person rooms 115/night). Accommodations with a Dalhousie student are available on a case by case basis (if this is of interest to you, please reach out to a.jackson13@dal.ca)

Meals

Global Brigades will provide breakfast and lunch for conference attendees. For attendees with allergies or special dietary restrictions, please let us know in the registration form and we will do our best to accommodate. Dinner is at the cost of conference attendees.

Dress Code

Conference dress code is casual (GB clothing always encouraged!)

Meet Global Brigades Staff, GB Canada board members, and fellow leaders and review conference objectives.
9:30am Global Brigades’ Holistic Model
Gain a more in depth understanding of the programs that make up our holistic model of sustainable development.
10:30am Global Brigades Past, Present & Future
Review the timeline of how Global Brigades grew from a small grassroots movement to a student led sustainable development organization and where we are headed in the future!
11:00am Breakout: Chapter Best Practices 
Rotate through sessions and share best practices with fellow volunteers and leaders. 
12:00pm Lunch & Networking
Lunch provided by Global Brigades.
1:00pm Activity: MyGBStory
Reflect on the ethical considerations of posting photos of your brigade, and learn about how you can share your GB Story.
1:30pm Breakout: Critical Thinking 
Dive deeper into sessions focused on thinking critically about sustainable development. 
2:30pm Guest Speaker

3:30pm #GB365: Year Round Engagement
Take some time to reflect on what it means to be a global citizen and stay engaged year round.
4:00pm The Leader In You
Work individually and in a group to learn more about the type of leader you are, and strive to be.
4:30pm Campus Action Plans & Awards
Condense all that you’ve learned into some solid action steps moving forward.
5:00pm Closing Remarks 
The conference will close with some final thoughts and thank yous!
6:00pm Dinner
Join GB staff, board members, volunteers and alumni to celebrate our accomplishments (Location TBA)
