8 day brigade (Panama)

A Law Brigade provides volunteers with the opportunity to gain hands on legal aid experience and empower rural, under-resourced communities in Panama. Brigaders shadow Panamanian lawyers and work together to provide pro-bono legal clinics, legal consult, and basic legal education to community members.

Brigade Week

The first day after the groups arrives, the program coordinator will give an introduction about Global Brigades Panama, go into depth about the new law program and the impact the brigade project will make on the community as well as give background about the community we are working with. .

On the second day, students will meet the community leaders to learn what their needs and expectations on the brigades are. A Panamanian lawyer will also thoroughly explain the relevant Panamanian laws and procedures to provide brigaders with a strong understanding of the project materials. With this knowledge, students will prepare materials such as posters, brochures etc in addition to preparing interactive presentations and activities for the legal education workshops. On days three to five, the group will be taken to the community providing legal clinics and household visits With the joint effort of Panamanian lawyers, we are able to provide community members with any legal guidance needed. .

On the sixth and seventh day, brigaders will empower the community members by providing them with legal capacity building workshops on various topics such as: the process of land titling, what is a contract, government land titling institutions, property rights, business rights, conflict resolution etc. Concluding the workshops, legal literacy exams will be administered to assess the growth in legal knowledge. Brigaders and community members will also engage in cultural exchange activities.

On the last day, students will be taken back to the city to the airport for departure.

Key components of Law Brigades

Pro-bono Legal Aid Clinics: Under the supervision of Panamanian lawyers, students will sit down with an individual community member to gauge what their level of legal knowledge is as well as assess what their legal needs are. Then, students will work together with a lawyer to provide free legal guidance to the community members. The majority of the community members have never seen a lawyer or received legal advice before.

Household Visits: During the household visits, student volunteers spend time getting to know the family. Students will receive household profiles prior to the brigade to have time to research and understand the legal needs of the family. The household visits are focused on the families who are committed to our land titling project. Household visits offer community members one-on-one legal consult and education as students and lawyers work together to assist families in the land titling process. Students will participate in issuing contracts, filling out legal paperwork and building basic legal knowledge.

Legal Capacity Building: Based on previous research assessments as well as student conducted interviews during the legal clinic portion of the brigade, students will identify the best ways to empower community members through legal capacity building workshops. A powerful way of improving their legal knowledge is through interactive workshops delivered to the community that have been tailored to their needs and level of understanding. Students will prepare materials such as brochures on the various legal concepts that they covered during their workshops to give to the community members as a resource material that they can reference in the future.
